ZINC COFFIN LINERS

FUNERAL INDUSTRY POLICY DOCUMENT - ABOVE GROUND ENTOMBMENT

Following the approval of 0.7mm thick Titan zinc sheet as an alternative to lead by the N.S.W. Department of Health it has been agreed to adopt the following procedure when coffining a deceased person to be entered above ground.

The Coffin/Casket maker or supplier must supply fitted High Impact IR3 virgin resin polyethylene film (Visqueen) of at least 100 µm (.004in) extending from the underside top of the pure titan zinc liner coving the deceased and the liner. This is to avoid any possible chemical reaction between the titan zinc sheet liner and any body fluid.
The Coffin supplier shall supply with such plastic lined titan zinc sheet liner a declaration in the format of FORM 1
The Funeral Director when arriving at the above ground burial shall furnish a declaration in the format of FORM 2 with FORM 1 attached.
The Funeral Director prior to sealing to titan zinc liner shall place a full-length sheet of polythene over the body (to avoid moisture condensing on the underside lid of the titan zinc liner).
All above ground burials in N.S.W. shall be in the format described under item 1 above.

The Policy Document is an Industry addendum to the Public Health Act Regulations' alternative agreed to by all Industry Representatives. The above guidelines have been adopted as a mean of avoiding potential problems as yet undetermined, which may arise in the future.
